Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about planning the perfect surprise proposal in Chicago. Can't find your answer? Let's plan together.
Investment & Booking
How much does surprise proposal photography cost in Chicago?
Sessions start at $795 and are custom quoted based on your date, location, timing, and what you want covered.
Our pricing structure: $795 for focused proposal coverage with brief portraits afterward. $895 adds 60 minutes of unhurried portrait time, room for celebration to breathe and phone calls home. $985 accommodates multi-location sessions or private venues. The Cinematic at $1,795 is our premium experience: two photographers capturing simultaneous angles, 90 to 120 minutes total, multi-location flexibility, and expedited delivery.
Every session includes a planning consultation, discreet proposal coverage, celebration portraits, and a hand-edited gallery with highlights in 48 hours and full delivery in 5 to 6 days.
Enhancements: Rush delivery ($225), champagne service with rental glasses ($135), proposal films (inquire), private venues and destinations (custom).
50% retainer reserves your date. Balance due upon gallery delivery.
How is proposal photography priced?
Every proposal is different, so every session is custom quoted within the structure above. Pricing depends on how long you want the session to run, whether you want extended portraits after the moment, how many locations you'd like to visit, and any special logistics involved.
A straightforward proposal with celebration portraits at the proposal spot starts at $795. Extended portrait time, multi-location coverage, and The Cinematic premium experience scale up from there.
Tell us about your proposal and we'll put together something built around it. Let's plan yours →
What is The Cinematic?
The Cinematic is our premium proposal experience at $1,795. It's structurally different from our other sessions.
You get Jeremy as the lead plus a senior associate as a second photographer. That means two cameras capturing the proposal moment from different angles simultaneously, so nothing gets missed and you have the choice between perspectives in your final gallery.
- Two photographers, two simultaneous angles
- 90 to 120 minutes of total session time
- Multi-location flexibility (proposal location plus an additional editorial portrait location)
- 48-hour expedited highlights
- Hand-edited gallery within 7 days
The Cinematic is the only named tier in our pricing structure. It earns the name because of how it's built, not because of marketing. Reserved for couples who want the most comprehensive coverage available, especially out-of-state grooms flying in for a single Chicago shoot.
How far in advance should I book?
Ideal: 3 to 6 weeks. That gives us time for a proper planning call, location scouting, and logistics.
Popular dates book fast: Holiday weekends, Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve, fall weekends (September through November).
Tight timeline? Proposals booked within a week or two are regularly accommodated. Reach out and we'll see what we can do.
How do I book without my partner finding out?
All communication happens through your preferred private channel: personal email, text, or phone. No shared inboxes.
Invoices and contracts are sent directly to you. No social media tags until you give the green light.
Hundreds of surprise proposals coordinated. Keeping the secret is part of the job.
Planning Your Proposal
Can you help me plan the whole thing?
Yes. Every session includes a personal planning consultation.
You don't just get a photographer. You get a proposal planning partner who has done this hundreds of times. We help with:
- Location selection based on your story, your partner's personality, and the vibe you want
- Timing down to the minute: best light, least crowds, optimal positioning
- Logistics: where to walk, where to kneel, where we'll be hiding, what signal to use
- Cover story coaching: what to tell your partner about why you're there
- Weather backup: a Plan B location ready to go
- Vendor coordination if you're adding musicians, flowers, or decorations
We hop on a call and walk through everything step by step. By proposal day, you feel confident, not panicked.
I'm flying in from out of state. Can you help me figure out the location?
Yes, and a meaningful share of our couples are doing exactly that. We scout the city for you, know which spots are quiet on which days, and can walk through options together on a planning call before you book.
Tell us your date, where you are flying in from, and any vision you have, and we will build the experience around your logistics. The Cinematic tier at $1,795 is especially popular with out-of-state grooms because it lands the most coverage in a single Chicago visit.
I have no idea where to propose. Can you recommend a spot?
Absolutely. Tell us three things and we recommend the right spot:
- Your partner's personality. Private and intimate? Grand and dramatic? Adventurous? Urban? Nature?
- Season and time of day. Some locations shine in fall, others glow at sunset, some are year-round perfect.
- What happens after. Dinner reservation? Family waiting nearby? Champagne and a walk?
We've photographed proposals at every major Chicago location. We know the hidden angles, the crowd patterns, and the spots most photographers miss. Let's find yours →
What time of day is best for a proposal?
Golden hour (the hour before sunset) gives you the most beautiful, cinematic light:
| Month | Golden Hour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| June | ~7:30 to 8:30pm | Longest days, warm evening light |
| September | ~6:15 to 7:15pm | Fall foliage beginning, comfortable temps |
| December | ~3:30 to 4:30pm | Holiday lights, early sunset, dramatic sky |
Morning proposals work well too: fewer crowds, softer light, and indoor options like Lincoln Park Conservatory are stunning.
Can family or friends be part of it?
Yes, and the family reaction photos are often the most emotional images of the entire set.
- Hidden nearby: Family waits around a corner and rushes in after the yes
- Surprise reveal at dinner: Propose privately, then arrive at a restaurant where everyone's waiting
- Part of the setup: Friends hold signs, parents walk you to the spot
- FaceTime ambush: Call family immediately after for a live reaction
We capture it all. The more genuine emotion, the better the photos.
Should I hire a proposal planner or just a photographer?
For most proposals, a dedicated proposal photographer who also plans is all you need. That's exactly what The Proposal Studios offers: photography plus full planning support included in every session.
You might want a separate planner if you're adding significant production: elaborate decorations, live musicians, custom signage, private venue rentals. In that case, we coordinate seamlessly with planners and vendors.
What should I say when I propose? Any tips?
The words matter less than you think. Your partner isn't grading your speech. Most people remember the feeling, not the exact words.
Keep it short. Two or three sentences from the heart beats a ten-minute monologue. Nerves make long speeches harder.
Specific beats generic. "I knew I wanted to marry you the night we stayed up until 4am talking about nothing" lands harder than "You're the love of my life."
Don't memorize, internalize. Know the feeling you want to express, not a script. The genuine stumble is more powerful than the polished delivery.
The Day Of
How does it actually work on proposal day?
Before you arrive: We get to the location early, scout angles and light, and position ourselves completely out of sight. You get a text confirmation that we're in place and ready.
You approach: You send a quick text when you're close. We start capturing from the moment you walk in, blending into the environment with telephoto lenses so your partner has no idea.
The moment: You give the signal we agreed on (or just go for it). We're shooting continuously: the approach, the kneel, the reaction, the yes, the embrace. Every second captured.
After the yes: We step out, introduce ourselves, and transition into celebration portraits. Your partner only finds out after the ring is on.
How do you stay hidden? Will my partner see you?
Discretion is central to everything we do. We shoot with telephoto lenses from significant distance. We dress casually to blend in. We use environmental cover, benches, pillars, crowds, trees, that we've pre-scouted.
At outdoor locations, we look like a tourist. At indoor venues, we coordinate with staff for a discreet position.
In hundreds of proposals, we've maintained the surprise every time.
What if my partner suspects something?
Partners who suspect something are almost never expecting it in that exact moment. The suspicion is general (I think a proposal is coming sometime), not specific (I think there's a photographer behind that tree right now).
We help you build a cover story that makes the outing feel natural. Even the most suspicious partners are genuinely surprised when it happens. The emotion is always real.
What if the proposal doesn't go perfectly?
The imperfect proposals make the best photos.
The ring that won't come out of the pocket. The nervous voice crack. The partner who says "are you serious?" three times before saying yes. The tears that make it impossible to get through the speech.
These moments are genuine. They're yours. Our job is capturing what actually happens. The real moment always wins.
What should I wear?
Wear something that feels like you. A step above casual: nice jeans and a great jacket, or whatever makes you feel confident. Avoid logos and busy patterns.
For your partner (without tipping them off): Suggest a nice date or mention you want to try a new restaurant.
If your session includes extended portraits at additional locations, consider bringing a second outfit in your car for a different look.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just the ring (don't forget the ring) and your partner. We handle everything else.
Want to add special touches? Champagne service with rental glasses is available ($135 add-on). You can also bring flowers, signs, or anything that makes the moment yours.
Chicago Proposal Locations
What are the best proposal spots in Chicago?
Every location has a personality. Here are favorites, matched to the feeling you want:
Dramatic and Grand:
- Adler Planetarium: Panoramic skyline views across the harbor. Iconic, cinematic, deeply Chicago.
- Skydeck Chicago (Willis Tower): The glass Ledge, 103 stories up. The ultimate wow factor.
- Milton Lee Olive Park: Skyline and lakefront views without the Navy Pier crowds. Stunning and underused.
Intimate and Romantic:
- Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool: Hidden oasis in Lincoln Park with winding stone paths. Private and peaceful.
- Garden of the Phoenix: Japanese garden in Jackson Park with wooden bridges and cherry blossoms.
- Lincoln Park Conservatory: Lush indoor gardens year-round. Perfect for colder months.
Urban and Cinematic:
- Chicago Riverwalk: River views, city architecture, golden hour light.
- North Avenue Beach & Boardwalk: Iconic Chicago skyline meets sand and lake. Strong for couples who want the photos to read unmistakably as Chicago.
- South Pond Nature Boardwalk: Lincoln Park's hidden boardwalk with the Honeycomb pavilion.
Have a different spot in mind? A favorite restaurant, a meaningful park bench, a rooftop only you know about? We photograph proposals anywhere in Chicago. Let's find yours →
Which locations require permits?
Usually permit-free: Public sidewalks, Lincoln Park pathways, Riverwalk, most street-level spots.
May require permit: Millennium Park, Grant Park, Chicago Botanic Garden, museum properties, Lincoln Park Conservatory.
We'll let you know during the planning call whether your chosen location needs one. No surprises on your big day.
Can we do an indoor proposal? It's winter.
Winter proposals are some of the most magical.
Indoor: Lincoln Park Conservatory, private dining rooms, hotel lobbies, museum spaces.
Outdoor winter: Snow-covered lakefront, holiday lights, Christkindlmarket ambience.
Winter light is beautiful: soft, dramatic, golden even in early afternoon. Don't let the season limit your vision.
Nervous About It? Good.
I'm terrified I'll mess it up. Is that normal?
Completely normal. Almost every person we work with says this.
The nervousness is actually the point. It means you care deeply about this person and this moment. That energy shows up in photos as authenticity, not anxiety.
It's almost impossible to mess up. Your partner is saying yes to you, not to a performance. The fumbled ring box, the shaky voice, the tears that come before you can get the words out: those are the moments that make the best photos and the best stories.
Our job is making sure the logistics are handled so you can focus on just one thing: the person in front of you.
What if I cry and can't get through my speech?
Then your photos will be incredible. The proposals where someone can barely speak through tears produce the most powerful images. Your partner isn't waiting for a polished speech. They're watching someone they love be overwhelmed by love. That's the whole point.
Neither of us likes being in photos. Will the portraits be awkward?
You'll have just gotten engaged. You'll be running on pure joy. That changes everything.
The celebration portraits after a proposal are the easiest portraits we shoot all year. You're not performing happiness, you're living it.
Years of professional theater experience taught us how to create environments where people stop performing and start being themselves. Instead of "smile at the camera," you might hear "look at the ring" or "tell each other the first thing you want to do as an engaged couple." You forget the camera is there.
What if they say no?
If you know your partner well enough to plan a proposal, you already know the answer. The surprise is the when and the how, not the yes.
Couples who are ready for this step show that readiness in dozens of small ways before the proposal ever happens. Trust what you already know about your relationship.
Your Photos
How many photos will we receive?
25 to 100+ hand-edited images depending on session length and coverage, including the surprise moment, reaction, celebration, and portrait session. Every photo is edited in a cinematic, painterly style. No filler.
When will we get our photos?
Highlights: Within 48 hours, perfect for sharing with family and posting online.
Full gallery: 5 to 6 days for standard sessions. 7 days for The Cinematic.
Rush delivery: Within 72 hours for the full gallery ($225 add-on).
Every image is hand-edited image by image to achieve a rich, cinematic finish.
Can we share photos on social media right away?
Yes. Highlights within 48 hours are hand-edited, professional images ready to share. Your gallery has no restrictions. Share, download, print, post wherever you want.
How do you handle editing?
Every image is hand-edited personally, image by image, in a cinematic, painterly style. The slightly blurry photo of you ugly-crying might be the most powerful image of the day, and that kind of judgment lives in the editing process.
What's the difference between a proposal session and an engagement session?
A proposal session captures the surprise moment and the raw, unscripted emotions that follow. An engagement session is a planned, styled portrait shoot.
With a longer proposal session that includes extended portraits at multiple locations, or with The Cinematic tier, you can effectively combine both into one session, saving you time and money. We'll talk through whether that makes sense for you during the planning call.
Weather & Logistics
What if it rains on proposal day?
During our planning call, we always establish a backup plan: indoor alternative, covered location, or rescheduling to the next clear day at no extra cost. You'll know exactly what to do before the morning arrives.
Chicago weather is unpredictable. Your proposal doesn't have to be.
Do you travel outside Chicago for proposals?
Yes. Serving Chicago, the North Shore, and surrounding suburbs. Available for destination proposals nationwide. Travel fees apply outside Chicago metro. Get a custom quote →
What's your cancellation and reschedule policy?
Rescheduling: Flexible. If we're available on the new date, your payment transfers with no penalty.
Weather: Always accommodated.
Cancellation: 50% retainer is non-refundable. All details in the contract.
After the Proposal
Do you also photograph weddings?
Yes. The Proposal Studios is the sister brand of Jeremy Glickstein Photography, an award-winning Chicago wedding photography studio.
151+ five-star Google reviews. Fearless Photographers. WPJA Spotlight. Best of Zola 2025 and 2026.
Many of our proposal couples continue with us for engagement sessions and wedding day coverage. Same creative vision, same hand-edited care, from the first surprise to the last dance. You won't have to start from scratch with someone new. You already know us, we already know your story, and the creative vision stays consistent.
Should we book an engagement session too?
If your proposal session includes extended portrait time at multiple locations, or if you book The Cinematic, you may already have everything you need for save-the-dates and your wedding website without a separate engagement session.
Standalone engagement sessions are also available through both The Proposal Studios and Jeremy Glickstein Photography. Details →
How soon after the proposal should we book our wedding photographer?
Photography is one of the first vendors to book. Popular dates fill 12 to 18 months ahead. Peak season Saturdays (May through October) go fast.
Since you already know and trust us from your proposal, the wedding conversation is natural. No getting-to-know-you phase needed.
